Saint-Malo → Cancale by bike: the complete guide

26 March 202611 min read

The Saint-Malo to Cancale ride is the most popular cycling excursion on the Emerald Coast. 15 kilometres of varied coastal scenery, an arrival at the port de la Houle with the finest oysters in Brittany, and the option to push on to the Pointe du Grouin for a 360-degree view of the Mont Saint-Michel bay. This guide details the route kilometre by kilometre, including the hills, points of interest, and our tips for making the most of it.

We ride this route several times a month, in every season. Every detail in this guide comes from our direct experience on the ground.

The route kilometre by kilometre

Km 0-3: Le Sillon to Rochebonne

Cycle path • Flat • Easy

Start on the Sillon cycle path, facing the sea. 3 kilometres of perfectly flat riding along the promenade. The wooden wave-breakers line the left, Belle Epoque villas on the right. This is the warm-up section — pleasant and effortless.

Km 3-6: Rochebonne to Rothéneuf

Cycle lane + residential road • Gently rolling • Easy

The path becomes a cycle lane along the coastal road, then enters the residential streets of Parame and Rothéneuf. Two small climbs (50 m each, gentle gradient) mark the transition. You pass near the carved rocks of Rothéneuf (300 m detour, 3 euros entry).

Km 6-9: Rothéneuf to La Guimorais

Municipal road • Hilly • Moderate

The most demanding section of the route. You leave the urban area for the coastal countryside of Saint-Coulomb. Two significant climbs: the exit from Rothéneuf (200 m at 6%) and the ascent after la Guimorais (300 m at 8%, the steepest on the route). Traffic is light, the landscape increasingly wild. This is where an electric bike makes the biggest difference.

Km 9-12: La Guimorais to Port-Mer

Municipal road • Gently rolling • Easy-moderate

The terrain eases. You pass through the hamlet of la Guimorais (wild beach below, worth a stop), then ride quiet lanes through fields with the sea as a backdrop. The anse de Port-Mer appears: a cove of golden sand with turquoise water on fine days.

Km 12-15: Port-Mer to Cancale (port de la Houle)

Coastal road • Descent then flat • Easy

The arrival in Cancale is a magical moment. The road descends towards the town with a sweeping view of the bay, the oyster beds stretching to the horizon, and Mont Saint-Michel in the distance on clear days. You ride down to the port de la Houle — this is where the oysters await.

Arriving in Cancale: oysters at the port

The port de la Houle is the heart of Cancale. Around ten oyster farmers' stalls line the quayside, each offering their flat and cupped oysters, freshly harvested from the beds. Pick a dozen (5 to 8 euros depending on size), sit on the harbour wall facing the bay, and enjoy with a lemon and perhaps a glass of Muscadet from the bistro next door. Simple, authentic and delicious.

Our tip

The stalls are open daily from 9 am to 7 pm in season (reduced hours off-season). Cupped oysters no. 3 (standard size) cost 5-6 euros per dozen. Flat oysters (Belon) are pricier (10-12 euros per dozen) but have an incomparable flavour. The stall furthest to the right as you walk down to the port is often the least crowded — same quality, less waiting.

Optional: Pointe du Grouin (+10 km round trip)

The Pointe du Grouin is the northernmost headland of the Mont Saint-Michel bay. From Cancale, it is 5 kilometres further north, with a steep climb over the final 500 metres (10% gradient). The reward matches the effort: a 360-degree panorama of the bay, Mont Saint-Michel, the Chausey Islands, and the coastline as far as Cap Fréhel on clear days. You may spot colonies of cormorants and, with luck, dolphins in the bay.

Our tip

With an electric bike, the final climb is no problem. On a regular bike, the last 500 metres are often walked — no shame in it, the gradient is tough. Bring a windbreaker: at the top of the Grouin, the wind always blows. Arrive early in the morning (before 10 am) or late in the day for the best light and fewer crowds.

Getting back: 3 options

Option 1: Cycle back (recommended)

Same route in reverse. The prevailing wind (westerly) is often at your back on the return, making the ride easier than the outward leg. The climbs from the outward journey become descents. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.

Option 2: Keolis bus line 16b

The bus accepts bikes and connects Cancale to Saint-Malo in 30 minutes. Regular departures (check timetables at breizh-go.bzh). Handy if your legs have had enough after the oysters and the Grouin.

Option 3: Bikey Rent pick-up

We can arrange to collect your bike in Cancale. Get in touch in advance for conditions and availability.
